Organik / Free-range / Tidak Organik

or

Sejak 2 menjak, rajin sungguh "berjalan-jalan" di internet sambil2 membaca blog orang. Macam2 blog terjumpa...sampai satu tahap kepala berkecamuk dengan informasi. Tergelak gulen2 pon ada.

Tapi dalam otak ting-tong, terjumpa satu blog ayam ni...blog owner kata dia bela ayam organik, jd I pon teruja giler nak gi baca. Bila baca2...1st paragraph ayat2 dia pon tak menunjukkan organik. I dunno la either the owner tahu ke tidak, sedar ataupon lalok dengan apa yang sebenarnya dia ternak, serta cara mana dia ternak...dan2 tulis ORGANIK.

To me, benda2 camni sepatutnya tak berlaku bila kita sebagai penternak, kita harus tau apa yg kita buat. Tak semestinya, ayam lepas siang hari bila malam ayam masuk reban itu dah dikira organik. Lebih2 bleh panggil ayam free-range je. Itu belum kira lagi berapa luas kawasan ayam2 ni bermain waktu siang hari tu...apa dia makan...brp jam dia tdo setiap hari, etc. Jenis ayam yg diternak tak kesah sgt, leh tgk sebelah mata je...TAPI disyorkan biarla ternak jenis yg slow growing nye baka. Yg penting kita tak sesat, dan pengguna tak rasa tertipu.

For Malaysia, I think these are the standards that can be applicable:
1. free-range - 25 to 50 sq ft per chicken, depending on soil conditions.
2. No fishmeal
3. No meat, bone and bloodmeal.
4. Slow growing - min 80 days.
5. Flock size - 1000, ie each reban or padang, max 1000 birds
6. Food - from certified organic farm or wild harvested eg sago
7. No antibiotics

If above is followed, I will pay a higher price anytime!

rice bran = no. Too much pesticide. Corn = most probably not since kebanyakkan GMO. Corn must be certified organic or grown in an organic farm and the benih must be non-GMO. Kelapa kering, maybe if no chemical used in extracting the oil. Ubi keledek can be used to replace jagung. So grow your own. Sago OK if wild harvested not those from Thailand made from tepung.
I may also allow the use of small fish that is frozen as long as it is not chemically treated like fishmeal. Sometimes I buy frozen 3" ikan kembung and bawal hitam costing around rm1.80 per kg wholesale.
So we can only produce very small quantity of truly organic chicken in Malaysia.
The rest have to be labelled free-range or natural, etc.
